Savory Spritz
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

For this school project, we were asked to come up with branding and packaging design for a bottled product marketed toward a high-end customer base. For me, fun branding still keeps something inclusive, so I wanted to come up with something that would still be desired by all demographics. And what is more fun than nostalgia?
Savory Spritz is an artisinal spray cheese that pairs high-quality dairy flavors with relaxed & exciting branding. While this ficticious product was a joy to dream up, it did not come without its challenges. Learning to create 3-dimensional objects proved to be tricky to learn, personally. I found myself behind the rest of the class, whom I was convinced was meeting without me to learn the ins & outs of the software together.
After stepping a way for a bit to get re-centered and catch my second wind, I was able to return to the project reinvigorated & determined to bring my cheese characters to life. I already knew that bringing a project to the finish line requires a balance of both passion and dedication, and through this project I learned that working through obstacles is easier once you find the sweet spot between humility & self-assurance. In my case, I took the time to regain that self-assurance.
Project Overview
Through competitor research, I knew I wanted branding that was both fun & colorful, but in an understated way. Instead of an array of saturated colors, I wanted to use a limited, muted palette & convey playfulness through joyful, unpretentious illustrations. Rounded slab serifs to me spoke a language that translates as both reliable and easy-going, and setting everything atop a backdrop of raw parchment tells customers, "we care about quality, not showmanship".
Sketches
The pipeline to the end product was mostly an easy route because of how much of the branding I was able to sketch out from the very beginning. Having a clear idea of the mood & direction, as well as getting to dream up the very shape of the can itself, gave way for the sketches to practically draw themselves.
Drafts
Layering each part of the brand's personality in Adobe Illustrator is always an exciting step. It was challenging at first to come up with dynamic compositions within such a small area that required both clear communication and unpredictable whimsy, yet it all came together one element at a time. This step made me understand why some people prefer different foods not to touch on their plate; sometimes it's easier to consume & appreciate things that way as opposed to several designs spilling into each others' sections.
Final Design
After further refinement & a bit of tweaking with the size of the label (& therefore the can), I feel I was able to combine fun with functionality in the exact language I imagined in the early sketches. While designing the can was the biggest challenge of all, seeing the project come together gives me so much pride. For any cheesemongers out there who would like to collaborate on bringing this project to life ever further, please contact me at your earliest convenience. In the meantime I will be researching how to submit to Shark Tank & sticking to 2-dimensional designs.
