Projects

Each of these projects taught me significant lessons about design, so I proudly present them along with those valuable lessons I learned.

This was indeed the most fun aspect of the project, as I had a lot of ideas to pull from. In sketching for the logo I tried elements inspired by high noon shadows, the massive cinderblock artworks found at the Cinati Foundation, the mysterious Marfa lights, and of course the open road.

Personal Experience is the Best Inspiration

I had many ideas of what the logo itself could look like. Many of which were representations of specific plants I saw in the store. Since the business offers unique plants, I was interested in creating a symbol of a leaf, but maybe one that was a little surprising in a way.

Experience in One Career Can Carry Onto the Next

This was my first exploration in designing a die line & it was really fun! I first experimented with different compositions for the front of the box. I knew from this stage that I wanted to incorporate a window through which you could see the pasta inside because that would get people immediately excited for what's to come. I wanted the design to be surprising & stimulating.

Finding the Value in the Existing Brand

The pipeline to the end product was mostly an easy route because of how much of the branding I was able to sketch out from the very beginning. Having a clear idea of the mood & direction, as well as getting to dream up the very shape of the can itself, gave way for the sketches to practically draw themselves.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

I first tried out iterations of simple, striking imagery that evoked feelings of being trapped, of feelings of hiding behind or amongst things. I felt a lot of frustration in this stage before deciding to take a photographic approach.

Utilize the Different Tools in Your Toolbox

I first sketched out ideas for the cover, knowing I would be recreating artwork based on Julia's art style. I knew I wanted to incorporate a tarot card layout, since her tarot deck is one of her most recognizable works. I explored ideas of drawing Julia herself, perhaps with a brightly colored & unusual skin color as in her paintings of women, but in the end couldn't help but recreate my personal favorite painting of hers; a whimsical toad with wings.
